Ode to American English and Fat Is Not a Fairy Tale

"Ode to American English" by Barbara Hamby
In this poem, Barbara  is saying how she misses American English. Throughout reading it, I seemed to get lost in the rhythm and style of the writer. In the poem she uses devices like alliteration along with numerous punctuation marks that sweep you into her words. As I was reading it, it felt like the speaker missed American culture as a whole. The reader can tell she misses the diversity and uniqueness, but I also went on to think perhaps she was culture, or home, sick.

"Fat Is Not a Fairy Tale" by Jane Yolen
In this poem, the author is referencing popular fairy tales. She seems to be disappointed in the fact that fairy tale characters all skinny and trim. Perhaps the title is referencing that it really isn't great being fat, or that fat people aren't worthy of a fairy tale(and should be). From the speaker's message the reader can possibly assume that she herself is plump herself and is disdained with no support in the fairy tale world. This poem utilizes imagery  and vivid words.

Class Discussion:
"Fat Is Not a Fairy Tale"  Author uses allusion to popular fairy tales.
In the end she is referencing items that are round and good, relating it to how 'round' people will hopefully be among them one day.
