Twelfth Night

Queen Elizabeth- the first female Queen, the Virgin Queen. Daughter of Anne Boelyn and Henry the VII. Hated her mother because she made Henry divorce Katherine, she had a masculine strong persona
King James I- Succeeded Elizabeth, rumored to be gay
Elizabethan times- Black plague, people were beheaded and put on stakes on the bridge as you drove in, Puritans were hated and pushed out of england to America
The Globe? Actors?- Only men were allowed to act, limited props, Shakespeare had no stage directions, everyone was allowed into the theater, believed everyone should be able to watch so there's a better idea of how to behave, shakespeare had to please everyone
Twelfth Night- 12 days after christmas, magi bring their gifts, partying, drinking, happyness,

Act One--exposition
Act Two-- raising action
Act Three-- climax
Act Four-- falling action
Act Five--resolution

Duke/Orcino- Weak masculine, he's winny.
Viola (Cesario)- twins with Sebastian, on a boat and it crashes. The end up on different sides of Illyria and she is with the captain. She dresses as a man b/c she will be taken advantage of
Duke is in love with olivia, but she dosn't love him.
Olivia- She has tons of land, but says she is going to mourn for seven years, she won't date Duke. She's a strong woman.
Toby- - drunk all the time, mooches off niece olivia invites andrew telling him olivia is interested in him.
Andrew- Toby's friend
Maria- servant, has hots for toby
Feste- the clown points out the obvious
Malvolio- servant/head butler. people hate him because he's rigid
