Theme

theme
central idea or meaning of a story
unifying point of plot, characters, setting, pov, symbols, et al
distingguish between them and subject

Many themes explore human behavior but don't condemn,n or endorse it
Do not look for the lesson of a story

Pointers
look at the title for hints
look for symbols
look if main character changes or develops as a result of actions
look for generalizations
don't just say the subject, say what it has to do in the story  ex. instead of  providing satisfaction, revenge defeats the best in one's self.
make sure theme is more generalized rather than a specific description
don't use cliches as stating theme ex. love conquers all
some stories have less theme than others
