Amir responds selfishly out of fear. Amir frustrated because Hassan lived and treated like a servant, but also gets all of Baba's presents and Baba's treatment is like family.

10 Minute free write
First off, I'm a happy ending person. I was so excited when it was like Soraya and Amir were going to finally have a family of their own. I also thought that maybe since Amir finally corrected his wrongs and was open with what had gone on in his life that it would somehow life some kind of curse that didn't allow them to have kids. I don't remember, but I thought something Rahim said kind of indicated that or maybe I'm just crazy. Also, even when I thought we'd been around all the twists and turns I thought maybe the book would be smooth sailing...NOT. I never expected that Sohrab would try to kill himself. After all Amir had gone through to get to that point it was like things were finally going to be okay. On the other hand I guess it goes to show you just how miserable Sohrab's other orphanage must have been if he had such a dislike that he was willing to take his own life instead of go to an orphanage. I also don't know what it would be like to be in Soraya's shoes. After so many years of longing for a child her husband was bringing a boy home and she thought she was going to have a family. She went out and bought items and made a room for him and everything, but when he finally arrives he won't speak or even play with all the new things she has bought for him. As a mother I think it would be terrible. All day she has to watch the little boy who she thought was going to be a pleasant addition not talk or interact with anyone. I can only imagine it may have made the pain worse.
On the positive side, at the end of the book Sohrab finally smiled at Amir, even though it wasn't much it leaves me hoping that things were looking up for the family. I always hate how books end abruptly, but at least I'm consolidated by imagining my own ending. I would hope Sohrab gradually opens up to the family. That he will go to school and get a job so that maybe one day he can be married and pass on Amir and Hassan's blood, something so important for the Afghan people.
On the positive side, at the end of the book Sohrab finally smiled at Amir, even though it wasn't much it leaves me hoping that things were looking up for the family. Chapter 16-19
As with the other chapters, this set had a BIG twist. I guess I should have seen it coming because I always wondered why Baba was so kind to Hassan and said he was family when socially it wasn't really acceptable. I was still shocked when I read it, but it made all of the begining of the book make more sense. When Hassan and Alli left their house Baba was devastated and plead for them to stay. It only makes sense now that Hassan was really his son. I wonder how Amir would have treated him if he had knew that even though Hassan was part Hazzara he was part of his blood family. I also wonder if Hassan knew about his parentage. On one hand I feel like he might possibly known because he was so loyal, but on the other hand it would make all of Amir's actions against him seem even worse if they were brothers.
The whole situation also makes me think less of Baba, but it also makes the situation with Hassan’s mother make more sense. I also wonder how Baba and Alli came up with an agreement to claim Hassan as Alli’s child. This also means that Alli had to endure all the scrutiny for having a child with a woman who left immediately when really it was Baba who was highly esteemed who was the one who should have been looked down upon. My last question would be who all knew about Hassan being Baba’s son. Obviously Baba, Alli, and Rhaim knew, but who else?

Chapter 7 class notes

p77 I ran because I was a coward...Hassan was the price I had to pay..to win Baba Is him looking back now when he says looking back now it was the price. At 12 he thought he was just a coward.

Rape is about power so Assef is asserting power over Hassan.

If Amir stood up for Hassan he'd be breaking the social contract of the society. At twelve it's hard to stand up for someone you love when society tells you you shouldn't.
As a 38, he sees this as his defining moment. "This is the winter everything changed"
