Kite Runner Response Chapter 7

I've really liked this book so far, this chapter was a little shocking and sad. In the beginning you could see just how close Hassan and Amir were when Hassan was encouraging Amir to compete even though he worried about what Baba would think of him. I loved how when they won the kite competition Amir didn't just say "I won" he said "WE won". I thought maybe that would be a turning point and he would begin to acknowledge Hassan as a companion or friend rather than servant. In what came in the next few pages I found that I was wrong. When Amir ran through the market we saw he cared. What we didn't know was if he cared more about the kite or about Hassan. It made me kind of sad when Amir said, "Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba" (77). It's hard for me to imagine he would accept what had happened to Hassan if it was what made him close to Baba. To me it was such a terrible thing I think I would be shameful of the kite knowing what Hassan had gone through to win it for me. Also,in my eyes it could have been so easy for Amir try and help Hassan. It breaks my heart of the possibility that Hassan could have possibly seen Amir standing and watching what was happening. Hassan is so loyal it breaks my heart that his life revolves around serving Amir and that he will go to the ends of the earth to do so.
