The Kite Runner

What type of plot structure does The Kite Runner have?
Kite Runner is in medias res because it starts in the middle of things, he is starting with a closer to current story.

Pay attention to the order of the chapters at the beginning. Summarize the subject of each of the first three chapters.
The first chapter about the. The second chapter is about mothers and about the connections the boys have in the loss of their mothers. The third chapter is about Amir's father. Amir expresses his feelings on never living up to his father's expectations.

  • What is the point of view of this story? What does this do for us as a reader? How does it inhibit what we can know?

The story is from the point of view of Amir, first person. As a reader this allows us to connect with Amir and hear his struggles and triumphs. It does however inhibit us from knowing any outside point of view. We will never be able to see the way Amir's words hurt Hassan or the world from the point of view of Amir's servants. Bias of reflection on his past, it reveals his reflections for us as a reader, we get his adult(mature) perspective.
  • Characterize Hassan, Ali, and Baba--and Amir as a result of his characterization of Hassan, Ali, and Baba Hassan is a lot like Amir except he also has to serve. He is trustworthy and lives for Amir saying he will even eat dirt if that is what he is asked.
Baba is a big man who does what others say he can't. He is fair to both Hassan and Amir even though Amir is viewed as superior to Hassan. According to Amir, Baba shows little affection and gives no praise even when Amir works hard and is proud.
Ali is gentle and kind and also hardworking. He is a strong man as he is a servant and has raised his son even when his wife left him immediately after the birth.
Amir is a boy who likes his position of superiority and does not view others as equal. Him and Hassan are like best friends, yet amir does not even consider him a friend.

What is the significance of Hassan's harelip?
Hassan is marked, in the beginning it was reason for his mom to leave. Baba was willing to pay for his servant's son to have surgery to fix it.

What about Assef character?

Significant Things
Amir is reflecting as his adult self. Amir is a jealous person. He Hassan and Ali's relationship, Hassan's athleticism. Amir thinks Baba favors Hassan. Amir wants to be treated better than Hassan. p22 Amir hears Rheam talking to Baba and he hears him say "A boy who won't stand up for himself becomes a man who will can't stand up to anything."
Amir gets what he doesn't get from Baba from Rahim. Amir doesn't see Baba's love, but he does see it from Rahim because he is proud of the story. Baba says p23 "If I hadn't seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes, I'd never believe he's my son." Amir's first word was Baba, Hassan's first word was Amir.
